Dubai Just Got Another Golf Course. Here Is Why That Is Good News For Us.

Emaar's new 18-hole course in Dubai South is easy to read as competition for an indoor golf business. Read that again. It's validation, not a threat.

Gulf News confirmed last week that Emaar is building a new 18 hole championship course in Dubai South, alongside a par 3 course, a driving range, and a clubhouse with the kind of restaurant and social space that reads more lifestyle destination than golf club. It is expected to open by the end of this year, serving the growing Emaar South community.

My first reaction was not the one people expect from someone who runs indoor golf venues. It was not competition. It was validation.

There is a lazy assumption that indoor golf and outdoor golf are fighting for the same customer, and that every new course announcement is bad news for a business like Five Iron. I understand why people think that. It sounds intuitive. It is also wrong, and Emaar South is a useful example of why.

The customer is not who you think it is

A meaningful share of the people who walk into a Five Iron bay have never played 18 holes in their life and have no immediate plan to. They are there for the social evening, the corporate event, the two hours with a client where golf is the format rather than the point. That customer was never going to book a tee time at Emaar South regardless of how good the course is.

Then there is the customer who does play outdoor golf, seriously or occasionally, and uses simulator time as practice, as a way to stay sharp between rounds, or as the only option when it is 44 degrees outside in July. That customer does not choose between us and a new course. They use both, for different reasons, at different times of year.

New courses grow the second group. They do not shrink it. Every new outdoor facility in this market is another signal that Dubai is serious about golf as a category, which brings more people into the sport at every level, which eventually means more people looking for practice time, more corporates looking for golf as a client entertainment format, more of exactly the demand we are built to serve.

What actually worries an operator

If you want to know what should worry someone running an indoor golf business, it is not course announcements. It is stagnation in the category as a whole. A market where nothing new opens, where golf stays a niche interest instead of becoming part of how this city does business and leisure, is the market that shrinks everyone's addressable audience at once.

Emaar South is the opposite of that signal. A major developer committing to a second championship style course in Dubai South, with EV charging and a clubhouse built for people who are not just golfers, is a bet that golf participation in this city keeps growing. I am happy to be on the same side of that bet.

The part nobody says out loud

There is also a simpler truth. Outdoor golf in this climate has a hard ceiling on when you can actually play comfortably, and anyone who has tried to get a tee time in peak season in Dubai knows availability is its own constraint. Indoor golf does not have a season. We are open in August. We are open at 9pm on a Tuesday. We are the practice option and the fallback option and, for a growing number of people, the preferred option, all year round.

A new course opening does not change any of that. If anything it puts more golfers in the market who will need somewhere to hit balls when the course is fully booked, or closed for maintenance, or it is simply too hot to be outside for four hours.

So when the next course announcement comes, and there will be more, I will read it the same way. Not as a threat to count. As a market getting bigger, with more room in it for all of us.
